China is reportedly preparing to back up its threat to the United States on Taiwan that it would “perish by fire” if it provokes Beijing.

It will conduct military drills on Saturday ahead of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's planned visit to Taipei.

Beijing promises “firm and resolute measures” to safeguard national sovereignty, according to China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

China won’t rule out using force to prevent Taiwan’s formal independence.
