US Building Sunni State in Iraq to Counter Iran?

There are alot of rumblings again about the possibility of the Sunni majority province of Anbar seeking autonomy within Iraq and escaping Shi'ite domination. Interestingly, the US seems to be in favor this measure. This to me seems to indicate the US has given up on trying to win over the Shi'ite parties in Baghdad and is now moving to limit their power so as to maximize US influence.
