Fastidious otters and penguins shake their heads at attempts by their keepers in a Japanese aquarium to cheat them of cheaper meals due to rising costs.

In an effort to cope with rising prices, the Hakonen Aquarium in central Japan has partially removed the traditional and expensive carp from its menu.

Instead, they offer their animals mackerel. Few of them are happy with that. Some penguins resolutely turn their beaks when offered mackerel.

"Some take it in their mouths, but then spit it out," says aquarium director Hiroki Shimamoto. "They understand that something is not as it should be". The problem is even greater among aquarium otters who 'unanimously' reject cheap fish.

The aquarium has reduced the amount of charun on the menu because the price of that fish has increased by 20 to 30 percent compared to last year. Management still partially buys sharun for food, but has no plans to fully return to it until the price drops.
