"The Descendant" by H.P. Lovecraft

This is just a brief story fragment, not published until after Lovecraft's death. Apparently Lovecraft wanted to expand the scope of his settings from New England, hence this being set in London.

It certainly doesn't feel very polished, there's some language and phrasing in here that feels atypical of Lovecraft, and which presumably would have been cleaned up had he had a chance to finish this story.

The picture used is of John Hook smoking a pipe, from 1905. Was just looking for any reasonably distinguished looking Edwardian-era Englishman, and this picture was public domain, so it's what you get as a stand-in for Lord Northam.
