What is an alcove studio in New York City? We'll demystify this topic in the following video. My name is Chris at Hauseit. Hauseit is the largest For Sale by Owner and Buyer Agent Commission Rebate company in New York City, established in 2014. Check us out at https://www.hauseit.com

An alcove studio is essentially a studio with a separate sleeping area at either end usually at the end of the main room. For example, you've often heard of alcove studios being described as L-shaped. What that means is as you enter a studio apartment or alcove studio apartment, you first enter at one end of a long classic living room. At the far end of the classic living room is typically a nook or alcove that is separate sleeping area. It can be on either side thus giving the room or the entire studio a L-shaped configuration.

Usually, the nook or alcove is not big enough to be considered a legal bedroom if it were to be walled old. Typically, the sleeping nook or alcove is only big enough for a modestly size bed and perhaps a dresser or a bed stand. Another reason for why the L-shape is so popular for alcove studios is imagine this: if you walk in to an alcove studio and you're standing at one end of the long living room, well, typically the alcove or sleeping nook will be partially or perhaps even completely hidden from view thus giving an illusion of separation for the sleeping space.

Do alcove studios typically have some sort of divider if not a wall? Well, it really depends on the individual tenant and occupant. Sometimes, people will have an artificial divider such as pair of curtains or standing tall book shelf that gives some additional sense of separation from the main living area. However, most people do not bother to actually put up an artificial or a real wall because the alcove or sleeping area is typically too small to be considered a legal bedroom anyway, and it might be claustrophobic. Most people will leave the sleeping area open to the rest of the living room.

So, do alcove studios typically cost more? Well, the answer is yes. It typically does cost more than a regular studio because of the additional living space or the additional sleeping space. However, an alcove studio usually be price a less than a traditional, full 1 bedroom apartment.

Interestingly enough, alcove studios were created originally by developers who wanted to make so left-over space that had odd configurations, so they created a new price point between a full 1 bedroom and a studio and thus the alcove studio was born.
