Why does Robert the Bruce have so many grandchildren?

Why do so many people claim to be related to Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots. Yes there is liars but, what if the ones truly descended of him?
James Burgess (Rumblefish98) discovers that if a certain rule was kept (though he admits that it is impossible for it to have been) the Scottish monarch who died in 1329 at the age of about 54 could potentially have close to five hundred thousand living descendants around the world.
