Zagreb coffee culture is a blend of three neighboring cultures coming together: Italian, Austro - Hungarian and Ottoman. As a result, people from Zagreb usually take their espresso (with or without milk) in a Viennese-style café slowly and without hurry just like Ottomans used to. :)

An American blogger Cody McClain Brown, for years living in Croatia, once neatly extracted the essence of coffee drinking in, not just Zagreb, but the whole of Croatia: "Coffee in Croatia is where everything gets done. It is where friends meet, where deals are made, it’s how favors are asked, it’s how people are hired, fired, introduced, married, divorced, everything."

And certainly, the special time for social coffee drinking in Zagreb is Saturday morning. It may be referred to as: "špica" (pronounced "shpitza") and it implies leisurely coffee drinking in the strict city center, probably in one of café streets around the main square with a prime - time between 10 am and 14 pm.

And there are plenty of good occasions for solo coffee drinking as well: when you're done with your errands or have some spare time between them - you'll go for a coffee, if you need to study or work on your laptop, if you're a mother with a sleeping baby in a stroller or you just want to be by yourself for a bit and read a book - you'll go for a coffee. There is always a good reason! :)

So, let's walk around downtown Zagreb on a nice summer Saturday morning and enjoy some of Zagreb coffee culture.
