A huge landfill in India catches fire as smoke blankets the sky over New Delhi
A fire broke out at a landfill in Barswar, north of Delhi, covering an area of more than 50 football fields on the 26th. Acrid smoke filled the sky above New Delhi for the first time. The landfill is higher than 17 floors. Covering an area of 50 football fields, it was planned to close more than a decade ago, but today more than 2,300 tons of garbage are still dumped here every day, and the decay of organic matter in the garbage leads to the accumulation of highly combustible methane gas.
Several fire trucks were at the scene trying to put out the fire on Tuesday, but the landfill remained like a burning mountain until the early hours of the next day, the report said. Three other landfills around the Indian capital have also caught fire in recent weeks.
