According to a Reuters report on March 8, in the center of Istanbul, Turkey, women marched on the streets in defiance of a government ban to demand equality between men and women and oppose male violence. Police clashed with them to maintain order. The women whistled and chanted "We are not afraid, we are not bowing" as they gathered in the city centre. Riot police used shields to push protesters back and sprayed the crowd with pepper spray. There have been similar clashes every year since Turkish authorities banned any marches in the city centre in 2019.
