If you haven't previously listened to "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", you'd do well to do so before listening to this story. Much from that story is critical for a full understanding and appreciation of this one.

"At the Mountains of Madness" would help a little bit as well, but is not critical.

Candlemas is Feb 2. Not a widely known holiday here in the US, but maybe it was more familiar a century ago?
