The U.S. is exploring ways to mitigate the impact to the International Space Station if Russia withdraws, which it indicated this week it intends to do, though senior NASA officials say Moscow has not formally conveyed an intent to end its two-decade-old orbital partnership.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the U.S. would continue to work with ISS partners focused on the safety of its operation and that of its astronauts.

Former NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman said while Russia and the U.S. are somewhat "stuck together" as, for example, U.S. gyroscopes provide day-to-day control over ISS orientation while the Russian unit provides propulsion. But he said Russia leaving could be an opportunity to ask for funding from Congress in order to not have to rely on the Russians.
