"TONGUING

One of the greatest difficulties that exist with passages that are tongued is not how fast one can play these passages, but rather how consistently and how even. Often a tongued passage will have a much different and poorer tone quality than a non-tongued passage. So it is suggested that one practice all tonguing exercises with the main goal being a good, consistent sound. Only once evenness of sound and attack has been achieved should the player consider working on speed. On all exercises and etudes, the player should concentrate on airflow at least as much as the tongue. The player should play multiple tonguing exercises and etudes at different tempi, from very slow to very fast. A primary goal should be to be able to play with perfect consistency at the tempo that is between a comfortable single tongue and a comfortable multiple tongue. The author also suggests that between each tempo the player plays one or two measures slowly using only the K syllable, and at a forte dynamic - this will help make the K syllable as strong as the T syllable. But be careful of overdoing this technique. As with all other exercises and etudes in this book, strive for mastering the musical line in addition to the technical problems presented."
