What is HSDD?
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder or HSDD is a loss of sexual desire or sexual drive. It is a very common problem in women. The Global Study of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors (an international survey of various aspects of sex and relationships among adults aged 40-80 years) reported a prevalence of 26% to 43% of women.

What causes low libido?
* Any form of mental illness, in particular, depression.
* Libido is associated with well-being. Hence, illness will depress libido especially cancer treatment.

* Anxiety
* Falling levels of hormones eg Menopause
* Medications : Blood pressure pills, Contraceptives, Mental Health meds

* Cirrhosis
* Unfulfilling sex
* Pain during sex (Dyspareunia) with vaginal dryness
* Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (Cystitis)

* Sex may have become ritualistic and mundane.
* Sexual differences in ambition and imagination between partners
* Low testosterone
* Endometriosis, Fibroids
* Thyroid disorders
* Age (falling levels of androgens)

How do you treat low libido in women?
By treating the various causes of low libido. Examples of treatments for different causes are listed below:
* Relationship counselling
* The relationship between work and the rest of life needs to be examined by the couple
* Professional help and advice over financial matters
* Depression may need treatment eg Bupropion
* Antipsychotics such as phenothiazines and haloperidol raise prolactin. Raised prolactin is associated with dampened sexual arousal
* Alcohol rehabilitation and counselling
* Change in blood pressure medications
* Treatment for underactive thyroid
* Oestrogen appears to bring some benefit in menopausal women but its specific effects on libido as opposed to the other sexual functions during the menopausal phase require further research.
* Transdermal testosterone patch
* Flibanserin
