Dr. Paul T. P. Wong, Ph.D., C.Psych, talks about the cure of shame and the cultural differences of shame in society at the sixth Meaningful Life Meetup for 2019.

Lesson 6, Part 1 of the M4L Meetup series, 2019.

Quote of the video: "In my class, in my many classes, Chinese students, even if they know the answer; they will not raise their hand and speak up. Not because they are humble, but because they are afraid. They're afraid that they may say the wrong thing or that they might be laughed at due to their accent. So, I learn to be thick skinned. That's how I survived. To be the minority you have to be thick skinned otherwise you can't survive. Humility and shyness are often motivated by fear of being devaluated. Fear of being devalued by others is the main cause of the feeling of shame. We are afraid of others looking down upon us because of our accent; because of our skin colour; because of relations. I'm so loosely attached that don't attack me anymore. So, I got a thick skin, I'm shameless."
