The Earth's surface is very young. In a relatively short (astronomically calculated) period of about 500,000,000 years, erosion and tectonic processes destroyed and rebuilt large areas of the Earth's surface, erasing nearly all traces of early geological surface history (such as impact craters). As a result, much of Earth's early history was erased. The Earth is between 45 and 4.6 billion years old, but the oldest known rocks are around 4 billion years old, and rocks older than 3 billion years are rare. The oldest living fossils are less than 3.9 billion years old. Critical period at the beginning of life is not recorded
71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Earth is the only planet on which water can exist in liquid form on its surface (although liquid ethane or methane may exist on Titan's surface, and liquid water may exist below Europa's surface). Of course, liquid water is essential to life as we know it. The heat capacity of the oceans is also very important for keeping Earth's temperature relatively stable.
