As a young man, Jesse thought he loved his mother, when in reality he couldn't be honest with her or stand up to her. He realized he resented her, and went and apologized for hating her for what she'd done wrong to him when he was a kid. He had real compassion and appreciation for her, rather than the fake emotional "love" that comes from guilt and obligation. You see rappers and gangsters from the black community hating and denigrating women, but turning around and thanking their single mothers like she's their god.
