Planting the Color Garden

I'm choosing plants and designing some themed gardens for our retail nursery, and this one is called the "Color Garden" - with plants choses for colorful flowers and foliage over a long season. I'll fill the gaps with annuals, but for now the focus is on establishing the shrubs and perennials. I may be a professional grower, but when it comes to garden design, I'm still just an amateur following the basics: taller plants to the mid and back, odd numbered groupings where possible, and with (some) attention to spacing for the final size of the plants. Anyhow, we're always happy to take suggestions, and soon I'll be moving on to the "Texture Garden" for the next 12 ft of the border.
