Canada: Treaty Six First Nations hold news conference following papal apology – July 25, 2022

The Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations holds a news conference in Maskwacis, Alberta, following Pope Francis’ visit to the community. Speaking with reporters are Grand Chief George Arcand Jr. of the Confederacy and Chief of Alexander First Nation; Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation Chief Tony Alexis; Ermineskin Cree Nation Chief Randy Ermineskin; and Frog Lake First Nation Chief Greg Desjarlais. They are joined by residential school survivors. The Pope is visiting Canada from July 24 to 29 to meet with Indigenous peoples and to address the role of the Catholic Church in Canada’s residential school system.
