Performance Notes:

Poet, Grégoire Le Roy, provided the text for this “ghostly” piece by Frenchman, Claude Debussy. The poem speaks of the angelus bells, part of the thrice-daily Roman Catholic rite, usually bringing joy and hope to those who hear; but from the perspective of the poem’s pained and cynical narrator, they only inspire his longing for “shadow and night.” While the poetry possesses a dark aspect, the music, while it never achieves a joyful quality, is quite melodic and even vaguely beautiful.
The keyboard part is mostly a series of largely unaffected ostinatos, but the vocal part should be performed expressively (though somewhat reservedly). A forte dynamic should never be reached (poco forte would be the upper limit). One should never play softer than a level where a beautiful sound can be produced.
