In this episode I am river fishing for northern pike but unexpectedly found a pile of smallmouth bass! It is mid march To early to even call it pre spawn river smallmouth bass but to late to call it winter smallmouth bass fishing although it is not quite spring yet. These smallmouth bass are finicky this time of year and won’t bite just anything. If you have targeted winter smallmouth bass on the river you know how slow the bite can be. My usual winter bass fishing tactics included Suspending jerk baits, rattle traps and jig n twister because the slow stationary presentation works best for these slow biters. That is why I get excited to catch a little bass in the winter season before other people start raking in pre spawn hogs. I do a lot of shoe fishing on michigan rivers and I catch plenty of smallmouth all year except for winter usually.

It all started one morning when I fished 3 hours at first light with out a bite then re located to another fishing spot later in the day. I threw every fishing lure I had on me from jerk baits and lipless crank baits to jigs and square bills ect… I couldn’t get a bite but I saw a big small jump when I first got there so I knew there were fish held up in the hole. I finally got 2 hookups with a blade bait before losing it and turning to the next closest thing I had in my box with was some spoons! My favorite spoon so far is the little cleo spoons!
