A substance of oily consistency and feel, derived from a plant and containing the principles to which the odor and taste of the plant are due (essential oil); A Volatile oil evaporates when exposed to the air, which makes it capable of distillation. This oil can also be extracted through expression or extraction.

Volatile oils can be used topically to stimulate the tissue that it is coming into contact with. They can also be used internally (Be careful to check for allergies!). There are two subcategories for the different effects these oils can have.

Stimulant or Expectorant Herbs that are rich in Volatile oils have an effect on the respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems. Some of the effects these types of volatile oils can have are Analgesic, Antimicrobial, Carminative, Diaphoretic, Expectorant, Febrifuge, Galactagogue and Rubefacient

Nervine rich herbs affect the respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems. Many of these types of Volatile oils are found in the roots with a protective covering, and need to be bruised or scared to release their odor. Some of the properties these herbs have are Antispasmodic, Carminative, Sedative
