Makiwara training is often misunderstood. Here's a video that helps clarify things. How much time do you have to condition your hands? Is it a priority? If so, how important is it to you? These questions determine the approach you can take to your own hand conditioning.

My name is Cameron Quinn and I am a student of Sosai Mas Oyama, founder of Kyokushin Karate. As his interpreter over a period of 17 years, Sosai taught me many things and shared many personal moments. I want to share as much of that with you as possible.

This is a basic description of the hand conditioning approach I have used for more than 30 years. It is safe if you approach it right and incredibly effective. Please be careful and increase the intensity over a long period of time.

Often students put off hand conditioning because they don't have an actual traditional makiwara. But if you have a tree close by that has the right balance of a reasonably soft outer and a solid core then you can start today!

All hand conditioning assumes you understand how to make a correct seiken fist, shuto knifehand, haito ridgehand and shotei palm heel and how to use the techniques properly so you don't injure yourself. If you are not sure, seek advice from your instructor. Safety is paramount.
