Huge Spanish Mackerel Frenzy at Egmont Key - Tampa Mackerel Fishing

Its Spanish Mackerel Mayhem! Its a Mackerel Blitz! A FRENZY! The Big Spanish Mackerel are here in Tampa Bay. While on a trip below the Skyway Pier at the mouth of Tampa Bay, our original plan was to chum for grouper and snapper. We had some good strikes but weren't able to capitalize on that bite. The mackerel showed up at Egmont Reef and started slashing our baits on the surface and on the bottom. After we moved towards the tip of Egmont Key, the Mackerel showed up there very quickly. I decided to switch gears and start chumming with live whitebait (scaled sardines) to get the mackerel close to the boat. Once I captured their interest with the chumming technique, it was easy to get a bite. The Mackerel were chasing our freelined baits all over with aggression. The strikes were pretty impressive.

Spanish Mackerel Tips and Rigs -
The tackle used on this trip was 50 and 80 lb Joyfish Mono Leader tied to a small treble hook, on a medium spinning setup. 5000 Ohero Hyper Reel and Ohero Platinum Rod.
On the Penn Fathom 25N and Star Aerial Rod, I had a stinger rig from Dave Workman and C&H tackle. This is what I caught the biggest spanish with. Sometimes the spanish well get a little bit hesitant to bite the wire leader, so its often good to have a rig setup with heavy mono when the bite slows down on the wire.
Always have a pair of good needle nose pliers with sharp cutters when rigging for spanish mackerel or other mackerel. You'll need to retie every couple of fish, and you'll also need to safely de hook the fish you land. Spanish Mackerel teeth are SHARP!
