"Surface lunge feeding is a special type of feeding behavior displayed by Humpback Whales in many parts of the world, but in Southern California, it is extremely rare. The occasional one-off lunge does happen from time to time, but consistent and repetitive lunge feeding is something I’ve only seen on 3 other occasions in San Diego waters. That is what made yesterday so special! We had one of the largest concentrations of bait I’ve ever seen in our local San Diego waters, and the Humpbacks gorged themselves on anchovies in the same spot for the entire day!"
