After a person is born again by believing the gospel - the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ - they should pray and ask the Heavenly Father for the gift of the Holy Spirit. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father to every born again believer in Jesus Christ who asks for it. After a believer has been baptized in the Holy Spirit, they have the ability to pray to God with their spirit as well as their mind. The only difference between praying with your spirit and praying with your mind is the source of the words you use. When you pray with your mind, you make the sounds of speech with your lungs, vocal chords, lips and tongue. The words used to speak are stored in your mind and your spirit uses the words in your mind to pray with your mind. When you pray in tongues, you still do the speaking but the Holy Spirit provides the words you speak.
