What does the unjust steward represent?

The Parable of the Unjust Steward is a rather odd story. The protagonist is a lazy, arrogant man who defrauds his boss after getting fired. He's definitely not a righteous man.

Yet, Jesus actually says he's smart, and he uses the parable to advise Christians on how they should act in the world.
