An order for developing a new heavy tank was placed on September 9, 1939. Over the course of its development, VK 30.01 (H) was a further development of the DW or Durchbruchswagen (breakthrough tank) concept.
The four prototypes were ready by October and after testing, it was decided to continue with the DW 30 projects and cancel any further development, two prototypes were converted into the 12.8 cm Selbstfahrlafette auf VK 30.01(H) also known as the Sturer Emil self-propelled anti-tank gun and six turrets manufactured by the Krupp company were placed at the Atlantic Wall.

To realize the Sturer Emil and fit the 12.8 cm K40 L/61 gun, the VK 30.01 (H) hull was stretched and an extra road wheel added to its Schachtellaufwerk roadwheel-based suspension system, to accommodate the new large gun, inside a open-topped fighting compartment.

One VK 30.01 (H) was found at the Henschel grounds in Haustenbeck, Germany.
It ended up on a target range in Sennelager and was found back in 1980s, and probably scrapped.
Both Sturer Emil's were send to the Eastern Front, one was destroyed and the other one was captured at Stalingrad and is now on display at the Patriot Park museum in Kubinka.
