Hey Al! - By Arthur Yorinks and Richard Egielski - Read Aloud Bedtime Story- with commentary

This story is one of my favorites from my childhood. It's about a man named Al who feels his life is too boring and mundane. His dog Eddie thinks there must be much better things to do than sit around their boring little cramped apartment. Following the invitation of a strange giant talking bird, the two find themselves as guests in one of the most unique and wonderful places they've ever been to! No, not Sesame Street. A Floating island in the sky with hundreds of different kinds of birds flapping around. The place seems perfect! Why would they ever want to leave? Well, because it turns out the island holds a secret. To remain there, they must turn into birds as well! As the magic powers of the island begin to transform Al and Eddie from man and dog into bird and bird, they flap their way to safety.

In this modern retelling of the legend of Icarus, Al, and Eddie soon learn the danger of flying too close to the sun. In this case, it's too close to a life of complete luxury. They learn as Dorothy did in The Wizard of Oz, that however mundane and boring the simple chores of life seem, there's really no place like home.
