VW A1 Shift Linkage Selector Lever Extension for 4sp to 5sp Conversions

A helpful solution for 4sp to 5sp transaxle swaps on the VW - A1 water-cooled vehicles.

The selector lever is an important part of the VW shift linkage. There is a difference between the 4sp and 5sp version though, to account for the wider side-side shifter motion needed to select between R, 1-2, 3-4, and 5 in the shift pattern. However, it's often left in the donor 5sp vehicle since that part is attached to the main shift rod just ahead of the shift rod bearing. The 4sp part looks similar to the 5sp part and unless you have the side by side, the difference in length isn't obvious.

The MissingLinkZ bolt-on selector lever extension offers an easy way to convert a too-short 4sp selector lever into the proper length for a 5sp transaxle. Just drill out the 4sp ball stud and then use the hole that's left to bolt on the extension.

The thumbnail is my re-creation of the mysterious part depicted in the Bentley Service Manual. If anyone has a photo of a real VW part set up like this, please post a link in the video description or send a copy via e-mail, link in the About tab on the channel home page.

This is one example of the sort of creativity you need to run a business like this. We were making a similar part in our short throw arm for the relay shaft. Then we had a few customers request a similar part for the 4sp to 5sp conversion. It took a bit of work to adapt our short throw arm design to work as a selector lever extension, but now it's a regular product available for order on the web page.
