Repainting the Hutch Double Wall Fireplace Insert

After repairing the air blower housing last year, the rest of the insert was showing it's age and needed some attention.

Timeline:

00:40 Trim Removal
02:15 Door Gasket Replacement
03:00 Wire Brush and Sand Old Paint
04:00 Cleaning Surface
05:00 Home Heating Options
07:00 Insert Painted
08:06 Doors Painted
09:25 Cure the Paint

All the brass trim was removed and cleaned. Rusty areas were wire brushed and sanded smooth. Surface cleaned with soapy water and a scouring pad then rinsed in many changes of clean water.

Applied 2 coats of Rustoleum High Temperature paint from the local hardware store. A good BBQ paint would also work. I cured the paint on the doors in my outdoor gas grill with 2 burners on low for an hour. I did this because the doors get pretty hot with a fire and wanted to give them a more controlled curing process. Rest of the insert paint was cured with a fire that burned for about 6 hours.

Really happy with the look of the repainted insert as well as the refurbished blower which now runs very smooth and quiet compared to how it was before. Should be good for another 30+ years of use!

This is my main backup source of heat for the house. Primary heat is solar hot air. If both those options are unavailable, I do have an old 80% natural gas furnace. Having multiple options for heat is important as none are totally reliable. We could have a major earthquake that damages underground gas lines. Power could be out for an extended period of time. It may be cloudy for weeks at a time. Hopefully, with multiple, independent heat sources, not everything will hit the fan at the same time.
