Quest For Negative Power Readings on the Aeotec Home Energy Meter, Gen 5.

A month long quest to get negative power readings on the Aeotec Home Energy Meter, Gen5.

Timeline:
0:00 Introduction
0:58 Gen 1 meter
1:42 Gen 2 meter
2:04 Current Transformer Installation
4:10 Gen 5 meter Installation
5:35 Energy Detection Mode Settings
9:41 Add Configuration Settings Screen
11:00 Negative Power Reading!

In the default mode (0), I found the gen5 meter read the same absolute value power as the gen2 meter. Somehow, I must have messed up trying to change to mode 1 the first time around and then tried mode 2. In mode 2, I found "negative" power was read as 0.000W, which is consistent with the "report only positive part" of energy.
Short answer is to set Device parameter 2 to 1:
For parameters of 101 - 103, power, energy detection mode configuration:
0 = Report power, energy absolute value; (default value)
1 = Report positive/negative power, report the algebraic sum energy
2 = Report positive/negative power, only report energy positive part (consuming electricity)
3 = Report positive/negative power, only report energy negative part (generating electricity)
I suspect mode 2 and 3 only report positive and negative parts, respectively, of the power as well as energy.

It took a few tries to get the change from mode 2 to 1 to take effect. I think this is where I messed up the first time, not giving the system enough time to make the change.

This is a real game changer for the diversion load project. Instead of blindly guessing at the power reading, it's now possible to read the exact value and direction. This helps to make the diversion load ramp up and down much faster as well as more closely tracking small changes in demand and generation.
