Dave from ccrx 6700 That's Railroading, had invited me and my wife along for a great day riding the Western Maryland scenic railroad behind the power house 1309.
Nicknamed the Maryland Thunder, the Western Maryland 1309 is an H6 class, Mallet type, Articulated steam locomotive with a 2-6-6-2 wheel configuration. 30" leading wheels, 56" drivers and 44" trailing wheels. Total length of 99.7 feet with a wheel base of 48.8 feet, and is 15 feet tall. Total weight with tender is 643,100 pounds. Fuel is a soft coal, Tender holds 12,000 gallons of water and 16 tons of coal.
1309 was built for the Chesapeake and Ohio RR to haul coal trains over the mountains of West Virginia and Kentucky. Built in 1949 by the Baldwin locomotive works, and was the last class 1 mainline steam locomotive that they built. The 1309 was retired in 1956 and sat in storage, then moved to the B&O museum in Baltimore Maryland in 1972 and stayed on static display until 2014 when it was purchased by the Western Maryland scenic RR and entered several years of restoration. Was put into tourist services in December of 2021.
