Game #14 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is one of the big four of board games dating back 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia, Backgammon! In this game, turn order is decided by a roll of a die, and then players take turns rolling the dice and moving their pieces around the 24-space board to their home. Each roll of the dice, the player must move their checkers according to the number shown on the dice (for example, if you roll 4-6, you can move one piece forward four spaces and another one six spaces). The same piece can be moved twice, as long as each move can be made separately (back to the 4-6 example, you can't simply move one piece 10 spaces. If the spaces 4 and 6 spaces away are both blocked off, you can't make that move). Rolling doubles (i.e. 3-3) allows you to act four times, twice for each die. A piece cannot land on a space occupied by a wall of two or more enemy pieces, so grouping pieces together where possible is a good strategy for protecting your pieces and blocking the enemy's progress. If one of your pieces lands on a space occupied by a single enemy piece, that piece gets knocked to the center of the board, and the other player must make a roll to get that piece back on the board before any further progress can be made. When all of a player's pieces reach their home board, the process of bearing off begins. A piece can bear off from the 1-point with a roll of 1, from the 2-point with a roll of 2, and so on. You may also elect not to bear off from those points and use a roll of 1-2 to move some of your pieces on the 6-point or 5-point a little closer so you don't have to roll as high to bear them off. The first player to bear off all 15 of their pieces wins.

There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Backgammon:

1. Backgammon has roots in ancient Egypt and possibly even Mesopotamia.
2. "Backgammon" is Welsh for "small battle".
3. About 300 million people on the planet know how to play backgammon.
4. Backgammon boards often fold up into self-containing cases, making them easy to transport.

Personal story: I own a velvet backgammon case, but I hadn't played it in years until my oldest cousin's wedding when my other cousin's wife brought her board with her.
