1. The European Commission has urged countries across the bloc to cut their gas use by 15% from August to March amid fears Russia could halt supplies.

It says the target is voluntary but will become legally binding if Moscow turns off the taps this summer.

The key Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Russia to Germany has been offline for maintenance for 10 days and is due to be turned back on this Thursday.

But there are concerns Moscow will not follow through on its promise.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that it was not clear in what condition the Nord Stream 1 turbine would be after its return from Canada following repairs.

He also said that there was a risk the equipment would have to be switched off and Nord Stream 1 would not be restarted.

2. A turbine for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is set to arrive on time in Russia and cannot be used as an excuse not to restart deliveries to Europe when maintenance on the pipeline ends on Thursday, von der Leyen has said.

“It’s already in transit back so there is no pretext not to deliver gas. By the way, there are potentially also alternative turbines that fit. It’s not the one and single turbine in the world that fits. There are identical turbines,” the European Commission president told a news conference in Brussels.

3. The European Union will set out emergency plans to reduce gas demand within months, warning countries that without deep cuts now they could struggle for fuel during winter if Russia cuts off deliveries, according to a draft of the EU plan seen by Reuters.

EU officials said the target would be for a 10-15 percent cut in gas use. The proposal, which could change before it is published, proposes a voluntary target for countries to cut their gas demand over the next eight months.

It could be made legally binding in a supply emergency, despite resistance from countries including Poland who feel their contingency plans do not need intervention from Brussels.
