Body camera video obtained by KUTV shows the moments a 4-year-old child fired a gun toward police officers in Midvale during a dispute over a food order.

The incident happened on February 21 at the McDonald’s near 400 West 7200 South. The child’s father, Sadaat Johnson, 27, became upset with McDonald’s workers who prepared his "surf and turf" burger order, according to a police report.

Johnson went back through the drive-up window and exchanged words with employees before brandishing a handgun, the police report states.

At that point, employees asked Johnson to pull around to the front of the store and wait while they fixed his order. Meanwhile, the workers called 911 and Unified Police officers were dispatched to the scene.

This is where the body camera video starts.

KUTV obtained body camera video from six officers who were at the scene.

The first arriving officers approach Johnson’s Honda CR-X and order him to get out of the car. After a few seconds of issuing commands, Johnson rolls down the window and is then pulled from the car while officers struggle to put him into custody.

It is during this struggle that an officer can be heard yelling "gun, gun, gun," followed by a single gunshot. Another officer yells "shots fired" and then "drop the gun!" Quickly after, an officer yells "kid, kid, kid!"

The officers realize there are children in the backseat of the Honda and then safely help the kids exit the car and go inside the McDonald’s. Nobody was struck by the bullet, though an officer’s arm was burned by the muzzle of the gun, according to the police report.

An officer who was waiting with Johnson’s children inside the McDonald’s reported the 4-year-old boy who fired the gun told her why he did it.

“The male child on his own free will began talking to me. The male child told me "I grabbed my dad's gun and tried to shoot the police so he could be free and do what he wanted,” the officer wrote in the report.

The video shows two officers realize how close their heads were to the line of fire when the child shot the gun.

“Our freaking heads were right there. Had it been any lower, it would have hit. At least we would have gone out together,” the officer says.

Police found a Smith and Wesson SD9 VE 9mm handgun inside the car.

Johnson would later tell investigators that it was not the first time his 4-year-old boy had taken his gun.

Johnson pleaded guilty to child abuse and aggravated assault in June. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail and a period of probation.

The videos and police report were released to KUTV this week through a public records request.
