JAS 39 Gripen: Russian warplanes hate what breaks all the rules
With Sweden (and Finland) on the verge of joining NATO, after decades of neutrality, let's take a look at Sweden's most impressive fighter: the patented Saab JAS 39 Gripen.
Many Americans associate the Saab exclusively with their cars. Saab models, such as the 900, 9-3 and 9-5, were hugely popular with American consumers before the company's auto division closed in 2011. What most Americans may not understand is that Saab was originally, and still is, an airplane. flying and defense companies. The company was founded in Stockholm in 1937 and has a proud history of developing weapons and aircraft. Saab is renowned for its lineup of fighter jets, including the Tunnan, Lansen, Draken and Viggen.
Saab will even partner with Boeing to produce the US Air Force's new trainer jet, the T-7 Red Hawk. But Saab's most advanced fighter, the Swedish Air Force's most important key, is the Gripen.
The story of the Gripen JAS 39.
The Gripen was developed to replace the older aircraft from the Draken and Viggen. Sweden wanted a new jet that could reach Mach 2, take off from short runways, and which would be smaller than the Viggen with a higher payload. Foreign aircraft were considered replacements, including the F-16, F/A-18, F-20 and Mirage 2000, before Saab was selected to build an entirely new aircraft.
For Sweden, creating a state-of-the-art fighter is a significant and polarizing endeavor. The program was under surveillance, so to speak. Two crashes during the flight test phase exacerbated attention and criticism. In the first incident, in 1989, test pilot Lars Radeström crashed on landing, as a result of a fault in the flight control system (FCS) pitch control, which caused pilot-induced oscillations. Here's a video of the accident. In the second incident, in 1993, Radestom - again - lost control of the Gripen while gliding at low altitude; The Gripen stopped and Radestrom was thrown out and survived.) And here's a video of the crash). The crash was caused by the high amplification of the pilot's command line input. Correction takes months.
