Britain on a knife edge: the 48 hours that lead to the PM's downfall

Boris Johnson's team were in tears today as the PM finally conceded he had run out of options after 48 hours under siege in Downing Street.
The Tory leader himself was said to have been 'sanguine' rather than angry or upset when he and his team recognised that they had 'tried everything' around 8.30am.
Over the previous two hours the government's resignation toll had topped 50, including several of his most loyal Cabinet ministers, and the new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi had publicly called on Mr Johnson to go.
However, according to insiders it was a calmer assessment of the situation that had brought about the change, rather than any particular blow. One told MailOnline: 'Yesterday there were things that looked possible... but we'd tried everything. Thinking about things overnight and this morning it was wasn't possible.'
Staff were less composed than the premier, and several were said to be 'incredibly upset and in tears' as he wrote his resignation speech that declared: 'I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world, but them's the breaks'.
