Top Three Combos for a New Bass Fisherman

If you are up for more than one rod, here's the next two, with particular emphasis on number 2, the classic Medium Heavy, Fast action.

In my opinion, these three rods cover the vast majority of fishing. Certain specialized techniques may have issues, but you usually you can make it work.

For your first baitcaster I don't really suggest a DC, or digital control, reel because you won't learn nearly as much about controlling your reel. There are cheaper reels that can be great, as shown by my testing of the BPS Formula Limited Edition, but for your first, and to go with a MH/F rod, I really think you should get something in that $150-200 range. They'll last longer, have better drags and brakes, feel nicer and generally be more enjoyable and easier to learn on.
