The Heat Reveals Our Hearts
Let me illustrate this idea of heat, difficulty, situational difficulties that come into our lives, and how the heat reveals the heart. We have a promise in Genesis chapter 3. God says that thorns and thistles will be with you all the days of your life. He says that you will work by the sweat of your brow because
of what Adam and Eve did in Genesis 3:6.
Heat has always been our nemesis. And it doesn’t matter where you go. It doesn’t matter what you do. You will never be able to successfully get rid of all the heat in your life. Sometimes some people think that “I’ll just move away from that individual. I will move across country. I will change jobs. I will change marriages. I will change relationship. And this will take care of the heat in my life." It won’t.
Eventually, the heat will always come back. And we want to make sure that when heat comes into our lives, that we’re not cursing the sun. Cursing the sun is a futile thing to do. And you don’t want to be doing that. Because the problem, you can't do away with it; you can't make it go away.
And so cursing the sun, or blaming other people, and other things, and the problems that we have, that is futile. And that is the wrong response. What you want to really think about is what are the situational difficulties in my life revealing about me?
So, let's say that we take a bowl of mud, and we sit it out on a hot day on the asphalt. And let's say that we take a bowl of snow and we sit it out beside the bowl of mud on a hot day in July on the asphalt. The heat will reveal the constituency of the mud and the snow. The heat will tell you what is in the bowl. If it is mud, well, it's going to harden.
If it is snow, it's going to melt. And so heat tells us the kind of person that you are. Heat will tell you the kind of person that you are helping. If a person is living in the heat of the sun, which we all are. And that person begins to harden because of the experiences that they are having, then what we know is that person has a struggle with pride.
