R.F.D. = Rural Free Delivery. We take it for granted now, but in the early 20th century it was still controversial.

That reference to "standard time" in regards to the train schedule has a very fascinating story behind it. It is because of railroads that timezones became a thing, and prior to that, train schedules were an absolute nightmare, each station working off of their own locally observed noon time. It's an incredible story to spend a few hours on when you have the time to spare.
