Tilled and Sown-- Early Garden Planted!

Woo-Hoo! As of 6:45 on this last day of April, subscriptions for My Indiana Garden are at 300! I am officially happy! Thank you all so very much! ¡Estoy pero muy feliz, oficialmente! Mil gracias a todos!

(Tuesday am update: we had a perfect 1/2" of rain last night! Glad Stan got so much planted. He had all the greenhouse plants outside as well so they got a thorough "God's watering" instead of the garden hose! )

Hurray! We are now officially in garden season! Lori Fiechter here on a lovely late April day. It's been a late spring, but Stan was able to get the garden tilled on Saturday and started planting it today! Unfortunately, I wasn't home to video his actual potato/beet/bean/corn planting so there's not much to see but really nice looking dirt! When I got home, we planted white and red onions, scallions, garlic, 4 kinds of carrots, and a variety pack of lettuce. Oh, and some spinach. We will plant more sweet corn in a couple of more weeks to stagger the harvest. We haven't set out any of the actual plants yet but maybe by the end of this week or early next week. There are some seeds that need to wait until after the last frost date (which is around May 10 for us)--I'm talking about cucumbers, zucchini, and basil.

The onions had been hanging around in plastic bags for a few weeks too many--started sprouted and quite a few had rotted. Paper, not plastic! Live and sometimes learn, I suppose. I still need to plant asparagus--I think I found a patch for it now next to the blueberries. It is where we grew (lots of!) sweet potatoes last year, so we'll need to find a new place for them.

The seed potatoes we cut in half last week, making sure there were several good eyes in each piece. Let them dry out (sunshine is fine too) before planting. Put the cut side down and cover with several inches of dirt.
