Were People Raised When Jesus Died?

Matthew 27:51-53 report a number of portents that occurred when Jesus died: the temple curtain tore from top to bottom, there was an earthquake, the rocks split, the tombs were opened, many saints were raised from the dead. After Jesus's resurrection, these saints came out of the tombs, went into the Holy City and appeared to many. Matthew is the only Gospel to report the earthquake, the rocks splitting, the tombs opening, and saints rising the dead. If we had actually been present in Jerusalem at the moment of Jesus's death, would we have seen multiple corpses coming back to life? Dr. Licona shares what he thinks.

The matter of Matthew's raised saints was discussed in detail in a virtual roundtable, consisting of Mike Licona, Craig Blomberg, Paul Copan, Michael Kruger, Chuck Quarles, and Danny Akin. This discussion in its entirety may be read at https://bit.ly/3f5amdV
