Oyster Bed Fishing for Big Speckled Trout in Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay is home to a large population of Speckled Trout. Spring time is the best time to find roaming breeding size female trout, and the best time to catch big numbers of schooling trout. One key to catching these fish and other gamefish is finding the large oyster beds on the flats. Lots of different species of fish will utilize the oyster beds as a home or ambush point. It seems the closer I get to a big oyster bed, the more bites I start to get.

Also called Spotted Sea Trout, these fish are readily caught on a variety of lures. The best lure you can probably use though is some sort of soft plastic on a jighead. They love these lures so much you can fish with them exclusively. I prefer the Saltwater Assassin Sea Shad. These baits have a great wiggling action and are super soft. The fish hit them hard and hold on. Other favorite lures are Mirro Dines and Spook Jr.'s .
