The Battle for Mariupol
How Kids Lived Through the Barrage

‘We explain that Daddy’s in heaven, that he’s a star now, and he sees he hears everything, but he’s gone. How to explain to a child that he can’t hold him in his arms, take him to kindergarten, or play with him?’ A woman from Mariupol lost her 37-year-old son. A Ukrainian shell fragment killed him. Now she is left with a 4-year-old grandson: ‘We live, we breathe for this child’s sake. Now he’s our reason to live!’

It is hard to watch Donbass residents survive under fire from the Ukrainian army, but what is it like for children... Some have lost parents, some brothers and sisters. They spend dozens of days in basements, rejoicing over a small chocolate bar from humanitarian aid.

An excerpt from our documentary is about how children go through a war. Find more stories in The Battle for Mariupol.
