Dragon Rage (PS2) Gameplay Sample

Six years before Lair came about, 3DO showed the gaming world that a objective-based flying game starring a dragon was kinda of a so-so idea for a game to begin with. From what I have played of Dragon Rage, once you get past one of the most obnoxious forced-training modes ever, there is a playable, but not great by any means game to be had here. While I have had some fun playing this game, again, once you get past the stupid training level, this game is purely middle-of-the-road material that 3DO was known for churning and burning at the time.

This is pure 3DO, being the 3DO that gave them a very soiled reputation amongst gamers, and the gaming media at the time. The concept is solid, but the execution is so-so overall. Not a bad game from what I have played of it so far, and if found cheap enough.

Graphically, while the dragon model looks decent for 2 standards, I swear, the rest of the game had to have been started on the N64, and moved to the 2. Either that, or this is an example of how tough early 2 development was. I mean, for a 2001 release, it is within the window to have had it's start on the N64.

The controls are solid, but feel a bit clumsy as well. They aren't as tight as you would like them to be, but they also aren't abhorrent either. The music is good, and the voice acting is so-so.

Overall, I'd say that I have enjoyed what I have played of this game, but it's far from similar mission-based flight games on the 2 (Starfighter, Dropship, Ace Combat, etc), let alone anything Factor 5 released. Rogue Leader with Dragons this ain't.....that's what Lair was.
