Intro:

HOA has a flock of 70 geese “euthanized”…residents disappointed.

South Carolina…

Officials say the geese have been a problem since 2006, causing erosion in retention ponds, waste on walkways, common areas and lawns, and other problems….

Thoughts and questions

1. The HOA says that state and federal agencies recommended removing the geese….did they say how?
2. There are apparently non lethal ways to remove the geese…
3. It apparently costs $3.50 per homeowner to kill the geese, versus more expensive ways that may not solve the problem.
4. Was there a public meeting about this? If so, did the majority vote in favor? If so, I am ok with that.
5. There’s a balance, of course. When I went to a park with my wife, for some reason the fish were all dead and floating on the water….it was disgusting. In that case, the wildlife wasn’t exactly adding anything to the “experience” of the park.
6. Animals can certainly be a nuisance. We have squirrels that drop all sorts of trash in our backyard. But the first thought isn’t to kill them. And that’s the issue here. Sure, a flock of 70 geese can be an issue, although there were 32 ponds in the neighborhood, so it’s not like they couldn’t have found at least one that didn’t cause an issue. There has to be a way to keep the geese or reduce the number of geese for balance. That’s probably why most of the homeowners that did talk to the press wanted. Just a balance.
