Redfin has a great research department that they use for marketing. They found that crime/safety is the biggest reason where people choose to move…then they decide to not post crime information on their online home search portal.

Thoughts:

1. 50% of homeowners say crime/safety is the most important factor.

2. 32% of metro movers said taxes were a major factor

3. 24% of metro movers said climate change was a major factor? How does this work? I don’t understand. By moving, you are helping climate change? So if you move closer to your job and avoid a commute, or what?

4. So, Redfin is sitting around and they ask the question, if we know that people are influenced to move based on crime, should we add crime statistics to the website? They decide no. I think it’s a principled stand for the most part. Light quibbles with the definition of safety including crime

5. If Redfin isn’t going to spend any time on this, who will? Crime statistics are all over the place…seriously…and we know that this is a major consideration for people in choosing where to live.

6. Redfin did add information to their home search website though….

42% Cost of living? No
35% School Quality? Yes
24% Taxes? No
19% Climate Change? Yes, although in a sort of weird storm/earthquake/fire heat drought thing.
19% Racial Diversity No

7. Renters care less about taxes because they perceive that the taxes are paid by the owner of the property so they don’t care. But that adds to the cost of the rent, No?

8. What’s with the racial diversity numbers for renters and owners? No one cares about race or no one wants to talk about it to surveyors?
