Today a video showing a 9P157-2 firing an anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) on one of Ukraine’s southern fronts appeared online. Some Russian sources said that the firing was a part of a live exercise.

The 9P157-2, which was developed by KB Mashinostroyeniya, is based on the BMP-3 chassis. The system is armed with the 9M123 missile that is available in two guidance modes, ACLOS [automatic command to line of sight] via radar beam riding or SACLOS [semi-automatic command to line of sight] via laser beam riding.

The missile has a range of up to six kilometers and can be configured with a high-explosive anti-tank warhead or a thermobaric one.

High speed is considered the 9M123 biggest advantage. The missile can reach a speed of Mach 1.2, making it virtually impossible to intercept by all current active protection systems available for military vehicle.

The 9P157-2 carries two 9M123 missiles on launch rails, which are extended from a stowed position, the radar is also stowed during transit. Missiles are re-loaded automatically by the tank destroyer from an internal magazine with 15 rounds and can also accept munitions manually loaded from outside the vehicle.

The advanced tank destroyer was seen before with the Russian military as well as with the armed force of the Donetsk People’s Republic on several fronts in Ukraine.

The 9P157-2 is especially effective in defensive operations. KB Mashinostroyeniya claims that three tank destroyers of this type can engage 14 attacking battle tanks at once and destroy at least sixty percent of the attacking force.
