In the past 15 years, the number of great white sharks in the Atlantic has decreased by 79% and that of hammerhead sharks by 89%. For the marine ecosystem, sharks are the most important predators in the ocean and an important link in the marine food chain. They restrict the number of many marine organisms and are particularly vulnerable to overfishing. Once their number decreases, it will threaten the balance of the entire marine ecosystem.
