The Sun Joe AJ801E DETHATCHER | De-thatching the Lawn - Cool Season Lawn - Part 3 | 2020/19

A must have tool for your yard is a Dethatcher. It is still Spring in the Pacific Northwest. And for me that means preparing my yard and lawn for coming season. This video is the third part of a series, that will show the common man how to maintain his lawn with items from the big box stores, and not have to go through the challenges of purchasing professional grade tools, materials, herbicides, and seeds to have an amazing lawn that makes your neighbors jealous.

I started off by the day by mowing the lawn down to 2 inches, it is a little shorter than my normal 3 inches, but this makes dethatching much more effective. Speaking of thatch, what is thatch? Thatch is a layer of living and dead grass shoots, stems, and roots that forms between the green grass blades and the soil surface. Some thatch (1/2 inch or less) is beneficial; it acts like mulch to provide insulation from temperature extremes, helps keep moisture in the soil, and provides a protective layer of cushioning. However, when the thatch layer is more than ¾ inch thick, it can lead to increased pest and diseases problems (and reduce the effectiveness of some fungicides and insecticides), and reduce the amount of oxygen and moisture that are able to reach the soil and grass roots. When this happens, it is time to dethatch your lawn. Dethatching removes this thick layer of decaying plant material so air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer can reach the soil better, plus your lawn can drain more effectively.

You can you a rake or a special dethatching tool and remove thatch manually. But I have a pretty good size yard, and don’t have that kind of energy or time. I use a Power Rake/Dethatcher. My tool of choice is the Sun Joe AJ801E Power Scarifier/Dethatcher.

Its been a year since I dethatched my lawn, and if you follow my channel you know what happened. I received a new dethatcher last year, worked great. I loaned it out, broken, received a warranty replacement, and it has been sitting in my garage, since September 2019. So this video is all about learning more about thatch, unboxing and assembling, and using it.. Turned out GREAT! Check out the video and see how I did it, do not forget to put your questions and suggestions in the comments!
